Week 9 recap & Happy MLK Day

Happy MLK Day. We are thankful for the dream!

Conference play kicked back off this week as the Fillies went to Beeville, Tx to take on the Coastal Bend Cougars. The Cougars are hard working, play in transition and can shoot the 3 from all five positions. To start the game, the first couple of minutes were back and forth. Before the media timeout, the Fillies were 2/10 with some turnovers. After the media timeout, the Fillies were able to refocus themselves and come out with the defense and get some easy baskets. The Fillies went into the second quarter up by 6 points, 17-11. The second quarter was all in favor of the Fillies. Doubling the Cougars scoring 28 to 14 points with quite a few ladies adding to it, the Fillies went into halftime up by 20 points, 45-25. After halftime, the Fillies came out in the third quarter and continued the same dominance shown in the first half. The fourth quarter was a different story for the Cougars. Turnovers and fouls began to be the story in the fourth quarter. The Fillies were outscored 28-15 that quarter, but were able to handle business and still come away with the win. The final score was 82-69, and with that, the Fillies improved their conference record to 2-1.

Saturday, January 14, 2023 the Fillies hosted the Lady Roadrunners of Angelina who came into the match up 3-0 in conference play. The fast paced, rebounding, and very athletic nature of the team was highly talked about coming into this match up. The first quarter of play really displayed that. Angelina pushed in transition, ran offense and offensively rebounded, but the Fillies didn't come to play around. #24- Emily Mandamin hit two big 3's that gave the Fillies some momentum. The first quarter was close in scoring, finishing with the Lady Roadrunners up by just 1, 20-19. The second quarter was similar in the action. Going into halftime, the Fillies were down 3, 35-32. Coming out of halftime in the 3rd quarter, the Fillies turned up the defense. Getting steals, blocking shots, and keeping the offense flowing was the name of the game. They held the Lady Roadrunners to just 5 points that quarter taking the lead, 40-51. Although the Lady Roadrunners found more offense in the fourth quarter, the Fillies continued to pour in the points. The Fillies win 57-66, and advance to 3-1 in conference and 12-5 overall.

The Fillies have a bye on Wednesday, but are back in action on Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Athens, TX to face Trinity Valley.
