Week 13 Recap

Week 13 Recap

This week was full of festivities. The Fillies were in full support for all those battling cancer. Wednesday, the Buccaneers of Blinn came to town. Currently they are undefeated and ranked first in the conference. The Lady Buccaneers are an athletic and skilled team. To open the game the Fillies controlled the tip and took the lead. The first couple of possessions were back and forth in scoring. However, six made 3's for the Buccaneers  in the first quarter of play helped push them to a 12 point lead over the Fillies to end the first, 24-12. After the end of the quarter, the Fillies hoped to refocus their efforts and have a big second quarter. The Fillies struggled to find an offensive flow scoring just 5 points that quarter. Going into halftime, the score was 46-17. Offense for the Fillies picked up in the second half. Finding the basket was much needed for the Fillies, but the Buccaneers continued to pour in the offense. To end the third quarter, the score was 70-30. The Fillies found their offense in the fourth quarter putting up 21 points. While scoring, the Fillies were able to hold the Buccaneers to just 11 points that quarter to finish the game 81-51.

Saturday, the FIllies hosted Coastal Bend. The cougars are hard working, play in transition and can shoot the 3 from all five positions, and they did just that. To start the game the Fillies would take the lead and the Cougars would close the gap. The Cougars first 9 points were from behind the 3. Putting up 23 points and getting stops helped the Fillies finish the quarter up, 23-17. During the second quarter, the Cougars were able to take the lead. The Cougars made a run but the Fillies were able to make one of their own. Late in the second with about 10 seconds left in the half, the score was knotted at 36. A timely bucket by #2- Savannah Velazquez to beat the buzzer gave the Fillies a 38-36 lead going into halftime. A monster third quarter sealed the deal for the Fillies. The Fillies were aggressive in their scoring. Scoring from the floor and knocking down free throws allowed them to stretch the Fillies to stretch the lead to 8. In the fourth quarter, both teams scored 12 points. The Fillies were able to defend and come away with a win, 71-63.

Next, the Fillies take on Angelina Wednesday, February 15, 2023 in Lufkin, TX.
