The Fillies were back in action this weekend in the Grayson College Classic. While in Denison, TX, the Fillies faced Hill on Friday and Grayson on Saturday finishing the weekend 2-0 bringing their overall record to 4-0. Hill, a fast paced team led by freshman guard #24- Alyssa Berry who finished with 17 pts. #11- Giani Wimbish-Gay and #20- Sophia Hurtado chipped in 15 and 12 pts respectively. The Fillies had a solid second quarter putting up 20 pts to go into halftime up 8. Turnovers seemed to be the name of the game in the 3rd. Hill was able to capitalize off of the Fillies turnovers allowing them to piece together a run. However, the Fillies were able to hold on to their lead with some timely baskets and free throws late to lead the team to victory.
Game 2 of the weekend was against the weekend hosts, Grayson. What an exciting game this one was. The first quarter was pretty close in scoring leaving the Fillies down 19-15. A second quarter surge by the Fillies out scoring Grayson 18-8 allowed them to secure a nice 6 pt lead heading into halftime. Resuming play after the half, the Fillies still seemed to be controlling the game. They built as much as a 12 pt lead with #10- Sharayah Johnson leading the charge with 12 pts. However, beginning the 4th the turnover bug began to get the Fillies, and Grayson was able to go on a run allowing them to close the gap and take the lead. #10- Sonja Schuch for Grayson hit 2 big time 3's that gave them life. #5- Gionna Carr and #11- Avery Young for the Fillies were able to answer back with a 3 pt play by Gionna Carr along with a triple and a few triples by Avery Young. The effort by the FIllies at the end proved to be enough for them to outlast Grayson and come out victorious.
Some notable weekend performances were #5- Gionna Carr who had 8 pts, 3 blks, 3 stls against Hill. She also had 8 pts against Grayson and 4 assists to 1 turnover. #32- Kadresha Smith had 10 pts with 4 rebounds. #4- Gabby Owens with 9 pts against Grayson. #10- Sharayah Johnson averaging 25 pts and 8 rebs shooting 65%.
The Fillies are back in action this coming Tuesday, Nov. 15th in Waco, TX vs McLennan College.
